Despite international efforts to reduce plastic pollution and carbon emissions, the world is producing a record amount of single-use plastic waste, the majority of which is made from polymers derived from fossil fuels.
According to the Minderoo Foundation’s second Plastic Waste Makers Index, which was produced in 2019, the world produced 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste, an increase of 6 million metric tons.
According to the report, the demand for flexible packaging like films and sachets was what caused the additional plastic waste to be produced during those two years, which amounts to nearly one kilogram (2.2 pounds) more for each person on the planet.
