Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs José Manuel Albares said that bilateral relations with Morocco have clearly improved, based on a strengthened political dialogue and especially mutual respect.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper “La Vanguardia” shortly after the bilateral High Level Meeting in Rabat (HLM), Albares said that “it was an excellent summit, there have never been so many Spanish and Moroccan ministers on both sides of the table” noting that “it brought together 28 ministers in total.”

“There have never been so many agreements signed, we did not go to Rabat in search of photo-ops or formalities, we went in search of results,” said Albares.

The most important take from the gathering, according to the Minister, is both countries segmenting “a new relational model based on mutual benefit, the absence of unilateral actions, transparency and permanent communication.”

“Let me emphasize King Mohammed VI has certainly not received the President of the Spanish government for royal constraints, but the Moroccan Sovereign has been personally involved in the preparation of the HLM,” added the Spanish official.

The head of Spanish diplomacy added that “current president Sanchez is probably the Spanish president who has met the King of Morocco the most.”

“In fact, President Pedro Sanchez has received an invitation to Rabat for an upcoming meeting with King Mohamed VI,” added the Minister.

According to the communiqué of the Royal Cabinet, this will take place soon.

With regard to Ceuta and Melilla, the Spanish FM has indicated that customs will be organized as “we have agreed, that is, through a schedule that will be deployed gradually. On January 27, the customs office in Melilla, closed since 2018, was reopened. We do not want to rush things.”
