The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell will pay an official visit to Morocco, starting tomorrow evening, Hespress learned from informed sources.
The senior European official is expected to meet with Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita.
Borrell is also expected to visit the city of Fez, where he will give a lecture in the Euro-Mediterranean University.
The visit of the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to Morocco comes after turning the page on the dispute with him Last September, when Rabat canceled a bilateral meeting that was scheduled in the Moroccan capital with the European High Official.
The head of EU diplomacy had spoken in favor of “organizing a consultation so that it is the Sahrawi people who decide their future.”
He added that “the Spanish government also defends the same position.”
Bourita had deplored statements made by Borrell on the solution of the Western Sahara issue, saying they “do not reflect the position of Spain and the European Union.”
Borrell was forced to revise his position, stressing that the EU “defends a consensual solution between the parties, by mutual agreement, achieved within the framework of UN resolutions.”
The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, also responded to Borell’s comments.
“Spain’s position on this issue was expressed in the Joint Spanish-Moroccan Declaration of April 7. It is a public Declaration and perfectly known to everyone,” recalled Albares in an interview with Radio Cadena Ser.
