France is seeking to put an end to the crisis with Morocco, reported the French news agency (AFP) on Tuesday.
“Paris is trying to find gestures of appeasement likely to reweave the links with its historical partner in the Maghreb, without offending too much the Algerian rival,” added the same source.
AFP recalled that French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna is expected to visit Rabat in mid-December to prepare for a visit by President Emmanuel Macron in January, diplomatic sources said.
“Everything is still in motion, there may still be a postponement of the trip amicably,” one of these sources noted, according to the same source.
Macron’s government planned months ago to visit Morocco, in a move to reboost bilateral relations.
In an effort to warm up bilateral relations, Paris seeks to relax its policy on visas. “At the Elysee Palace, it is stressed that the tightening of visa requirements “is not irreversible”, said the same source.
In recent years, tensions arose between both countries due to different factors, including the 50% reduction of visa granting to Moroccan citizens, the skeptical stance on the Kingdom’s autonomy plan, and the Israeli spy software Pegasus case, involving the country in French media.
