Abdellatif Bardach, president of the National Electricity Regulatory Authority (ANRE), was elected in Cairo yesterday as president of the Association of Mediterranean Energy Regulators (MEDREG) for the next two years.
The event took place during the holding of the 34th General Assembly of MEDREG, where the Moroccan will now succeed Albanian Petrit Ahmeti.
The election of Abdellatif Bardach as head of MEDREG is a recognition of the progress made by Morocco in the field of energy, and its leading role in the region in the promotion of renewable energy, stresses ANRE in a statement.
In a speech on the occasion of his election, Bardach insisted that the current energy crisis, while having adverse effects on the world economy, was an opportunity to move resolutely towards an energy transition.
The official recalled that the Euro-Mediterranean region contains enormous renewable energy resources that are only waiting to be exploited, not only in the interest of the countries around the Mediterranean, but also of the rest.
He stressed the need to strengthen interconnections between the northern, southern and eastern shores of the Mediterranean and between Africa and Europe through the Mediterranean.
This invitation to consolidate the common resources of the Mediterranean, Africa and Europe is perfectly in line with the Kingdom’s efforts, to build win-win partnerships within the African Continent and with its neighbors in the East and North for a world of peace, prosperity and harmony, he explained.
Created in 2007, the MEDREG Association currently includes 27 electricity, gas or energy regulatory authorities in general, from 22 Euro-Mediterranean countries working collectively to promote the harmonization of energy markets in the region in the direction of gradual integration into a regional energy market, bringing together Euro-Mediterranean countries.
The MEDREG promotes all actions aimed at strengthening cooperation and the exchange of best practices between its members, which should contribute to meeting the necessary conditions for attracting the investments necessary for a successful energy transition, towards a mode of production, transport and energy consumption that is sustainable, efficient and taking into account the needs of consumers, especially the most vulnerable of them.
