Moroccan renewed surfer Ramzi Boukhiam qualified for the Championship Tour 2023, known as the most prestigious surfing competition in the world, making hims the first Moroccan, North African, and Arab to qualify for the “Dream Tour,” among the surf world’s elite.

As the Atlas Lions battled for their qualification for the second round of the Qatar world cup, Ramzi Boukhiam, who is ranked among the top 10 of the surf “Challenger Series”, guided by his emblematic coach Aziz Bouchga, secured his qualification for the Championship Tour.

“It’s been ten years since I started my Pro Junior career and competed in the WSL Qualifier series. This proves that if you work hard you can still get there,” declared Boukhiam in an official press release.

The athlete will now compete in the massive surf event that draws the greatest attention worldwide, behind the NBA and the NFL.

“I am very proud of the work I have done and of showing the new Moroccan generation that we have what it takes to succeed. The message I would like to send is that we must always keep hope and believe in ourselves. I did it for myself and for all young Moroccan surfers” said the Moroccan surfing champion.

The World Surf League (WSL) is in charge of planning both the World Championship Tour’s individual competitions and the World Qualifying Series (WQS) events that serve as entry-level qualifiers.

Thus, the qualifying circuit that enables entry into the WCT is the World Qualifying Series.

Ramzi’s dedication earned him a spot as the Moroccan flag bearer at the Tokyo Olympics in 2022, making him the first Moroccan and African to do so in the sport’s history.

When Ramzi was seven years old, he began surfing, and at the age of ten, he took first place in both national and international championships.

Before switching to surfing, this Agadir native spent a large portion of his boyhood near the coast bodyboarding.

Today, Ramzi Boukhiam is a role model for thousands of young Moroccans who think of starting to surf.

On his Instagram, the athlete posted a picture of him after learning about the qualification, alongside a picture of his younger self surfing with an emotional heartfelt caption.

“A dream finally comes true for a young kid coming from Agadir fortunate enough to have amazing parents who always believed in and always supported me no matter how big I would dream and my brother who initiated me to the sport, without them I wouldn’t be the man that I’ve grown to be. I know my father is proud from above.”
