Morocco signed today an agreement with UNESCO to train experts from 12 African countries to protect and include new sites in the World Heritage List.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Youth, Mehdi Bensaid, and the Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, on the sidelines of the work of the 17th Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage held in Morocco.

Bensaid said the agreement will make the expertise gained by Morocco in the field of protecting its heritage available to Sub-Saharan countries.

The minister added, in a statement to the media, that “Morocco has signed an important agreement with UNESCO, which is an implicit recognition that Morocco has a great experience in the field of tangible and intangible heritage as a result of the policies it adopts under royal patronage.”

The agreement falls under Morocco’s chairmanship of the UNESCO World Intangible Heritage Committee for the year 2022.

Ambassador of the Kingdom to the UN body Samir Addahre, was unanimously elected by the 24 Member States of the Committee as Chairman of its 17th session, held from November 28 to 3 December 2022.

The main functions of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage are to promote the objectives of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, to advise on best practices, and to make recommendations on measures to safeguard intangible cultural heritage.

As part of the 17th session, King Mohammed VI had called for the creation of a national center for intangible cultural heritage, whose mission would be to value the gains made in this field and to continue the systematic inventory of national heritage in the various regions of the Kingdom.
