The Very High-Level Meeting of the three African Climate Commissions, held on the sidelines of the 27th Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), welcomed the leadership of King Mohammed VI and Morocco’s support for their operationalization.

The top level meeting of African Climate Commissions, held on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt), commended, in a statement adopted by the participants, the leadership of the King and the support of Morocco, a founding partner, for the operationalization of these Commissions.

This meeting, co-chaired by the President of the Republic of Senegal, current Chairman of the African Union (AU), Macky Sall, and the President of the Republic of Congo, Chairman of the Congo Basin Climate Commission, Denis Sassou Nguesso, was attended by the President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, in his capacity as Chairman of the Sahel Region Climate Commission, and the President of the Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, in his capacity as Chairman of the Island States Climate Commission.

The meeting was also attended by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, and many African ministers in charge of environment and sustainable development, as well as senior representatives of organizations and partner countries of the three Commissions.

The adopted statement also recalled the creation of these three African Climate Commissions following the First Africa Action Summit for a continental co-emergence, held at the initiative of King Mohammed VI on the sidelines of the COP22 held in Marrakech in 2016.

It was also agreed at the end of this meeting to strengthen the current configuration of the three African Climate Commissions by establishing a joint coordination mechanism between their chairs and their founding partner, Morocco and the Climate Change Unit within the African Union Commission in order to make the voice of African States Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Climate Convention heard in a coordinated manner with international financial institutions and donors.

The participants in this very high-level meeting urged the international community, in particular the United Nations system agencies and philanthropic foundations, to fully support the actions of these Commissions aimed at reconciling the fight against the adverse effects of climate change with economic development, job creation and improvement of people’s living conditions.
