The disturbing psychological thriller ‘Smile’ surpasses 200 USD at Global Box Office after six weeks on the big screen.
When it first premiered in early October, the horror movie topped the US box office with its captivating story of a therapist who witnessed the bizarre suicide of a patient, which led to her going through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, making her believe that what she was experiencing is supernatural.
Brian Robbins, CEO and president of Paramount Pictures, the film’s production company told Variety that “The spectacular worldwide performance of ‘Smile’ demonstrates what is truly possible when you deliver a brilliantly sticky marketing campaign on top of a masterfully made high-concept horror film.”
The film was mainly made to be streamed on Paramount +, a digital film platform, but switched to a theatrical release following several successful test screenings.
The critical reception for the movie is very good, despite the very creepy visuals and haunting storyline.
Long before its release, the movie was trending on Twitter for following a particular marketing technique: the production company had actors infiltrate major league baseball games; Paramount placed these actors in the crowd and had them stand motionless, and smile throughout the entire game, directly at the broadcast cameras, which alarmed the crowds and people watching the games from home.
