Chariot, an African-focused energy company is expected to start green hydrogen pilot projects in morocco following the signing of an agreement with a UK-based manufacturer of green hydrogen systems ‘Oort Energy’ and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University.
The research and development center at OCP Jorf Lasfar, Morocco, will house one of the experimental projects agreed on with this collaboration.
The partners decided to use an Oort-patented polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer system to execute the first proof-of-concept projects. This technology divides water to create hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy, as read on Offshore Energy Today.
The three parties will evaluate the feasibility of the implementation of large-scale green hydrogen and ammonia production.
“We are very pleased to be working alongside Oort and UM6P in evaluating the viability of another significant green hydrogen project and expanding our footprint beyond our work in Mauritania into Morocco,” said Adonis Pouroulis, CEO of Chariot.
On his side, Oort’s CEO Nick Van Dijk explained that his company’s mission is to bring the cost of green hydrogen production down so that it becomes a widely accessible source of energy.
“Testing our unique electrolyzer technology in this setting will be a key step in demonstrating its capabilities whilst also assessing its efficiency, durability, and cost structure for implementation in large-scale projects,” said Van Dijk.
Morocco has been joining forces with various countries to encourage green hydrogen production.
Moroccan Minister of Energy, Benali has repeatedly highlighted Morocco’s green hydrogen capacities, as being one of the lowest costs of kwh produced in the world, calling it an “undeniable competitive advantage.”
