Supernatural psychological horror movie topped the US box office shortly after it premiered.
So far, the movie has grossed around $22 million in the United States and Canada, and $14.5 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $36.5 million.
Long before its release, the movie was trending on Twitter for following a particular marketing technique: the production company had actors infiltrate major league baseball games; Paramount placed these actors in the crowd and had them stand motionless, and smile throughout the entire game, directly at the broadcast cameras, which alarmed the crowds and people watching the games from home.
The actors’ smiles were described as ‘unflinching, incredibly sinister-looking grins’ by Collider, a digital media platform focused on the film industry.
This unconventional ‘guerilla’ marketing stunt is surprising, but it got people curious to see what the psychological thriller is really about.
‘Smile’ tells the story of a therapist who witnessed the bizarre suicide of a patient, which led to her going through increasingly disturbing and daunting experiences, making her believe that what she was experiencing is supernatural.
The movie has a lot of similarities with The ring (2002), and Truth or Dare (2018).
