The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that there have been significantly fewer newly reported cases of Covid-19 and urged everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to stop the pandemic.
According to WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the number of newly discovered cases of the disease, which has killed millions since making an appearance in late 2019, dropped last week to its lowest level since March 2020.
“A marathon runner does not stop when the finish line comes into view. She runs harder, with all the energy she has left.”
“So must we. We can see the finish line. We’re in a winning position. But now is the worst time to stop running,” he warned.
“If we don’t take this opportunity now, we run the risk of more variants, more deaths, more disruption, and more uncertainty.”
In policy briefs released on Wednesday, the WHO urged countries to invest in vaccinating 100 percent of groups at risk groups and keep testing and sequencing for the virus.
“These policy briefs are an urgent call for governments to take a hard look at their policies, and strengthen them for Covid-19 and future pathogens with pandemic potential,” Tedros said.
In comparison to the week prior, the number of reported cases decreased by 12 percent to 4.2 million during the week ending September 4.
But because many nations have reduced testing and might not be catching the less severe cases, it is thought that the actual number of infections is much higher.
WHO has recorded more than 600 million cases and roughly 6.4 million deaths since the pandemic began, though both figures are also thought to be significantly understated.
