Morocco ranked 99th in the Economic Freedom Index issued by the Canadian “Fraser Institute”, achieving 6.55 points in the general ranking for 2022.

Out of 165 listed countries, Morocco scored an average of 7.31 points in the financial system sub-index, while the Kingdom was given an average of 6.22 points in the freedom of international trade index, while it received an average of 6.84 points in the regulatory provisions index.

The index is divided into a group of sub-indicators for the classification of countries, most notably the size of the government, in which Morocco scored an average of 6.63 points, and the legal system and property rights for which Morocco scored an average of 5.73 points.

The Index of Economic Freedom ranks countries within four categories, from most free, to least free countries. The Kingdom of Morocco came within the third category.

The first places in the index are often occupied by Hong Kong and Singapore, followed by New Zealand, Switzerland, Ireland, the United States of America, Georgia, Mauritius, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada.

Bahrain topped the list of the Middle East and North Africa this year, followed by Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, and Morocco.

In the Maghreb region, Morocco ranked first (99th globally), while Mauritania ranked second (125th globally), Tunisia ranked third (128th globally), and Algeria ranked fourth (157th globally).

Economic freedom, according to the Index, is related to the concept of self-ownership, that is, the extent to which the right to choose and determine how individuals’ time and competencies are used, which is linked to opening markets, property rights, and ensuring the right of individuals to be economically free to engage in voluntary commercial transactions as long as they do not Harm other people or their property.

The first index issued by the Canadian “Fraser Institute” on economic freedom in the world dates back to 1996.
