The Israeli Public Broadcasting Corporation (KAN) unveiled on Tuesday new revelations on the scandal shaking the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, reporting that the Israeli Foreign Ministry has known about the sexual harassment allegations for nearly a year now.
In a televised report, the channel said that the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs was aware of the accusations against the head of the Israeli liaison office in Rabat, David Govrin, of having harassed Moroccan women long before the allegations came to light.
“About a year ago, the Foreign Ministry received a serious testimony against the head of the mission in Morocco, David Gorvin,” reports the news agency.
Specifically, on October 25, 2021, a Moroccan woman sent a complaint to the ministry’s spokesperson for the Arab media about the head of the Israeli liaison office, describing “unacceptable behavior.”
The women, quoted on the KAN website, stated that Gorvin “is obsessed with women,” and that “there are dozens of stories about this.”
The Moroccan woman, whose identity was not revealed, reportedly assured that “female employees at the hotel where Gorvin stayed for about 10 months have dozens of stories related to this case.”
Last week, a team from the Israeli Foreign Ministry arrived in Morocco to verify the allegations. In a statement, the department said that “this testimony is well known, and there are a series of allegations that have emerged and led to this investigation.”
The Israeli channel also reported that the Israeli Foreign Ministry decided to recall the head of the liaison office “immediately after his return to Morocco,” after having summoned him for questioning for the first time.
In parallel with Govrin’s summons, “a delegation led by the deputy director of the Israeli Foreign Ministry went to the Moroccan capital to investigate” other allegations against the head of the liaison office.
Prime Minister Yair Lapid, for his part, was informed of the details but declined to comment, the Israeli source continued.
In addition to the accusations of sexual harassment, the Israeli Foreign Ministry is investigating the disappearance of a “valuable gift” given to the liaison office by the Moroccan Royal Palace, on the occasion of Israel’s celebration of its “Independence Day”.
The israeli Ministry is also looking into the presence of an Israeli businessman close to Govrin in meetings of Israeli officials in Rabat, without having any official status with the Israeli state and while having no clearance.
Israeli media is reporting that the country’s Foreign Ministry is highly concerned with these allegation of sexual exploitation, as they highly threaten the novice and strong bilateral relation and close cooperation Morocco and Israel have been recently enjoying.
