Morocco remains the first supplier for the export of tomatoes of different varieties outside the European continent, said the European Commission in its 2022 report on the short-term prospects for agricultural markets.

By the end of 2021, 67% of imports of fresh tomatoes from the EU came from the Kingdom, added the report, seen by the Born2invest website.

“Morocco kept up its dominance in Europe’s specialized crops sector.”

Additionally, nearly 730,000 tons of fresh tomatoes are expected to be imported into the European market in 2022, up from 664,000 tons in 2021 (+9%), while the average growth over the previous five years was 23%.

It is anticipated that the EU’s exports of fresh tomatoes will continue to decline in 2022, added the report.

The European Commission’s report further stated that Morocco competed with the British market in the export of this agricultural product.

“The gradual loss of the British market (75% of EU fresh exports in 2021) is due to Moroccan competition in this market,” said the report.

Between January and March 2022, exports to the UK dropped by 28% compared to the same period last year, specified the report.

Overall, exports of fresh tomatoes from the EU continue to decline for about 10 years, added the report.

They are expected to decline to 330,000 tons in 2022, down by 12% compared to last year, according to the same report.

The international context of the Russia-Ukraine crisis, which began in late February also explains the decline in trade of this agricultural product and other goods in the European Union countries.
