The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed the proposal to appoint Puneet Talwar as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Morocco.
The policy professional was nominated by President Biden in March 2022.
“Morocco is a long-standing and valued partner. Indeed, it was the first country to recognize American independence,” Talwar said after his nomination.
The same statement clarified Talwar’s goals once in the position. The diplomat wants to support Morocco’s reform program, to highlight its leadership on peace with Israel as well as the promotion of durable political solutions.
“I will strongly advocate for American exports. I will also support the advancement of human rights,” he added to the statement.
The ambassador nominee expressed that “Morocco is a leader on key regional and global issues. It is at the forefront of efforts to combat terrorism. It has taken bold steps in the climate crisis. Morocco is also dedicated to economic development in Africa.”
Talwar built his career at the National Security Council and in a senior diplomatic position as Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.
The American diplomat is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and used to work as an Adviser to the NGO “Inter Medet” for conflict resolution.
He stressed that those experiences will help him to lead the US embassy in the Kingdom in an efficient way.
This appointment is expected to be voted on in a plenary session of the Senate shortly. Meanwhile, the new ambassador is expected to join his post within a few months.
