Morocco’s transportation unions submitted complaints to the Transport and Logistics Ministry, in a move to raise alarm about a delay in receiving promised government aid.
Several transportation workers said they still did not receive the first round of government aid, which the executive had announced back in April to support the professionals overcome the spike in fuel prices.
Secretary General of the National Union for Road Transporters of Goods, Mustapha Karkouri told Hespress in a statement that the process of disbursing the fourth round of aid began last Monday.
“Registration will be opened for professionals after 20 days in order to obtain a fifth round, at a time when hundreds of professionals still did not receive the first round,” he added.
Karkouri reported that the number of complaints the ministry received had reached 7,000 before the third round was announced, noting that “this number has increased with the successive problems associated with the rest of the payments.”
These barriers to professionals’ access to support funds are caused by a variety of factors, including the ministry’s interest in failing to update beneficiary data, as some of them sell their trucks between payments and still receive support funds without informing the new owner.
Previously, Government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas said in a press briefing that the government provided MAD 2.1 billion in support of transportation professionals in order to preserve the purchasing power of citizens who use public transport.
The government’s support involved over 180,000 vehicles nationwide, including taxis and buses.
