In a conversation with US President Joe Biden, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman described the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi as “a mistake,” according to the Kingdom’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.

In a televised interview with CNN, Minister Adel Al Jubeir said that the Crown Prince assured Biden that “this was a painful episode for Saudi Arabia and that it was a terrible mistake,” adding that those who were responsible were brought to trial and being punished with prison terms.

The Official continued saying that all governments, including the United States, make mistakes.

Biden had said he raised the murder of the Saudi journalist during his meeting with MBS, while in Saudi Arabia to rebuild relations, having previously promised to make the country pay over its human rights violations.

He said he had made it clear the journalist’s killing in 2018 was “vitally important to me and the United States,” while specifying that the two countries reached agreements on several other issues.

The president said that the Crown Prince told him he “took action against those who were responsible, and then I went on to talk more about how dealing with any opposition to the, or criticism of the Saudi administration in other counties was viewed to me as a violation of human rights.”
