Moroccan citrus exports to the United States increased by 156% during the current export season, reaching 110 thousand tons, according to data from the US Department of Agriculture.
This increase is driven by strong demand for Moroccan citrus and increased investments in fruit packaging technologies and cold-processing infrastructure needed to ship citrus to the US.
The production of citrus in Morocco during the current agricultural season recorded a nearly 12% increase compared to the previous season
The data also showed that Moroccan citrus shipments to Russia were not affected by the war in Ukraine, given that the end of the shipping season was before the outbreak of the conflict.
By the end of June, the Agriculture Minister said citrus exports have noted a record volume during this season.
During the campaign spanning from September 2021 to June 2022, the volume of citrus exports reached 735 400 tons, recording a growth of 42% compared to the same period of the previous campaign, said the ministry in a statement.
This growth trend has affected all types of citrus for all export destinations.
The volume of exports reached 628 600 tons at the end of the agricultural campaign, an increase of about 40% compared to the previous campaign.
Exports of oranges also recorded a growth of 62% to reach a volume of about 97 200 tons, said the same source.
The export sector of fresh fruits and vegetables recorded good performance during the season, despite a difficult international context and a crop year marked by drought and unfavorable climate conditions.
