Morocco’s General Delegate for Prisons is developing a new system to classify prisoners according to their degree of danger, to protect and prevent inner assaults within carceral institutions.
Mustapha Baitas, the official spokesman for the government, reported that the directorate is finalizing the works on the new classification system, which aims to alleviate the negative effects of overcrowding in prisons, as well as to protect prisoners from attacks.
During an oral questions’ plenary session in the House of Councilors, the official stated that in order to take into account the distribution of prisoners, they classify them by age, sex, and criminal charge.
Baitas drew attention to the fact that in recent years, the General Delegate for Prisons relied on the introduction of a new system of classification of prisoners, was based on an assessment of the degree of harm that they had been found guilty of.
The classification additionally results in placing different prisoners in institutions or departments within the same institution that accommodate them best.
This new system takes the prisoners’ gender into account, in order to ensure discipline and reduce the dangers posed by some prisoners.
Baitas also referred to a range of other programs from the delegation, such as the coexistence program, initiated in 2019.
The government official said that overcrowding in prison institutions is one of the most significant problems the General Delegate of Prisons faces, citing a series of actions undertaken by the latter, including the replacement of old and weary prison institutions that posed a security risk to inmates and personnel.
The aforementioned measures made it possible to improve Morocco’s total shelter capacity, as well as the conditions for accommodating and making prison space accessible to required infrastructure.
