The upcoming American animated movie Lightyear, which is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, made controversy for including a same-sex kiss scene.

Moroccan cinema will project the movie showcasing same-sex kiss while the film is banned in several middle eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.

The official account of the Media Regulatory Office of the Ministry of culture and youth said on Twitter: ” the animated film Lightyear, which is scheduled for release on 16th June, is not licensed for public screening in all cinemas in the UAE, due to its violation of the country’s media content standards.”

The animated film is a spin-off of the Toy Story movies, serving as an origin story for the fictional pilot/astronaut character Buzz Lightyear toy/action. Buzz’s close friend is a female space ranger who marries another woman. A scene showing milestones in the couple’s relationship includes a brief kiss.

Walt Disney, one of the world’s biggest media and entertainment companies, vowed to include the content of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) friendly culture.

Disney corporate president Karey Burke said earlier: “as the mother of one transgender child and one pansexual child.” adding that she supports: “many, many, many LGBTQIA characters in our stories”.

The movie is broadcasted this weekend in Moroccan movie theaters ”Cineatals” and ”Megarama” on 19th June.
