The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) elevated its travel alert to Level 2 on Monday after Monkeypox infections surpassed 1,000 confirmed cases.
According to the CDC’s Monkeypox and Orthopoxvirus Outbreak Global Map, there are 1,088 confirmed cases worldwide across 29 countries as of June 7.
The U.K. has the most cases with 302, followed by Spain with 198 and Portugal with 166.
The CDC posted on Twitter that Monkeypox has been reported in over 20 countries that “don’t normally” report monkeypox, including the US.
The CDC also urged travelers to avoid close contact with sick people, dead or live wild animals, and avoid contact with contaminated materials used by sick people or that came into contact with infected animals.
Earlier in May, Monkeypox started spreading outside Africa in western Europe, particularly in the UK, Spain, and Portugal.
Morocco confirmed one case of Monkeypox last week.
Monkeypox is a rare disease caused by infection with the Monkeypox virus. Its symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes, followed by a rash.
