Popular Party Deputy for Melilla, Fernando Gutiérrez Díaz de Otazu, filed a complaint this Friday with the State Attorney General’s Office against a Moroccan fish farm in the vicinity of the Chafarinas, for alleged crimes “against natural resources and the environment.”
He pressed for the protected nature of the islands, having been declared a “Special Area of Conservation of the Place of Community Importance” within the “Mediterranean biogeographical region Nature 2000 Network,” and a “Special Protection Area for Birds”.
He maintained the “special environmental importance of said archipelago” and highlighted the obligation to protect the marine habitat.
The farms consisting of”16 circular floating cages placed in two parallel rows of eight cages each, forming a rectangular enclosure marked out by buoys” are less than three hundred meters from the mainland.”
He said the enclosures were supplied and installed by a Spanish company “on behalf of a Moroccan company that, apparently, uses a supposed concession from the Kingdom of Morocco”.
But according to the complaint, these waters are under Spanish jurisdiction and, consequently, there is no “license, concession, or administrative authorization from any Spanish authority or public administration.”
