Andy Warhol’s iconic portrait of actress Marilyn Monroe sold out for $195 million at Christie’s auction on Monday evening in New York.
This portrait became the most expensive 20th-century art piece ever sold at a public auction.
Pre-sale estimates were around $200 million ahead of the auction’s final sale.
According to US media reports, the buyer was Larry Gagosian, a US art dealer, and owner of a chain of galleries.
Marilyn Monroe”s portrait beats the previous record for a 20th-century work, Pablo Picasso’s “Women of Algiers (version 0),” which was sold out at auction for $179.4 million in May 2015.
