Moroccans living abroad (MREs) sent to their home country a total of nearly MAD 93.3 billion by the end of 2021, up compared to MAD 68.18 billion recorded a year earlier, according to the exchange Office.

The total of transactions increased by 36.8% or MAD 25.07 billion, said the Office in its monthly bulletin of foreign trade indicators for December 2021.

The Office also reported a rise in trade of services, amounting to over MAD 64.16 billion, up by 0.3% compared to a year earlier.

In detail, exports rose by 6%, totaling MAD 139.018 billion by the end of December 2021, and imports increased by 11.4%, reaching MAD 74.855 billion, said the same source.

Travel, which is the main component of trade in services, has shown a decrease of 8.9% compared to the end of 2020, and a net decline of 59.2% compared to the pre-COVID period in 2019.

This decrease is mainly attributable to the decline in travel revenues by 6%, reaching MAD 34.273 billion by the end of 2021, while travel expenses remained almost stable compared to the end of 2020, according to the same source.
