Police on Wednesday arrested dozens of people who were spotted eating during daytime in Ramadan in a Casablanca café.
The customers and employees of the Cadance café located in the center of Casablanca were arrested, after large crowds gathered to watch the sudden security raid.
Security forces arrested only those who were reportedly eating in the café while leaving those who were using the space to work, and foreigners present in the café.
It is illegal to drink, eat or smoke in public during the fasting hours of Ramadan.
Modernity and Democracy Forum, a Moroccan citizens’ association condemned the arrest which it referred to as a blatant violation of freedom of expression and belief. The Forum said in a press release on Wednesday that several of its members were arrested during the raid.
It called on authorities to release all those arrested.
