During the last two days, calls for a protest for the “immediate opening” of the Morocco-Melilla borders have multiplied, after nearly two years of Moroccans being stranded in the enclave.

Across social media sites, advocates for the border opening say that the dates given by authorities as a deadline have expired nearly three days ago.

The callers to the protest, most of whom are Moroccans stuck in the enclave, intend to hold a sit-in this Sunday, in front of the headquarters of the Spanish government delegation in Melilla.

These protests come about 72 hours after a group of Moroccans stranded in Melilla gathered together with political parties and civil bodies, demanding the opening of the Bani Ansar crossing.

Morocco expressed its willingness to reopen the borders by removing the barricades at the aforementioned crossing, and maintaining and cleaning the corridor.

Protestors are accusing Sabrina Moh, the representative of the Spanish government in the city, of delaying the process.

Moh, the representative of the Spanish government in the autonomous city, reacted to the nightly protest calls, expressing her rejection of what she described as “pressure and threats to reopen the borders.”

The official shared a Tweet saying that she “will guarantee to the residents of Melilla that the central government’s plan is for the general benefit of the city and within the framework of joint and coordinated action.”

The representative of the Spanish government added that “pressures and threats will not change what we planned, and will not divert us from the set goal.”
