Shipping companies have gradually resumed, Tuesday, their passenger services through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Tangier-Med port has begun to receive passenger ships from Spanish, French and Italian ports, while ferries have resumed their activities between the port of Tangier-Ville and the Spanish port of Tarifa, in full compliance with COVID-19 measures still in place to protect and secure the route of passengers pedestrians and vehicles within the port.

The port of Tangier-Med offers 20 daily connections, linking it to the Spanish ports of Algeciras and Barcelona, France’s Marseille and Sète, and Italy’s Genoa, while the number of connections should increase in the coming weeks with the recovery of passenger traffic and the approach of summer.

In this context, the Director of the Tangier-Med port told the press that “all authorities and services are fully mobilized to resume [maritime links] in the best conditions of comfort and serenity for travelers.”

“In coordination with Spain’s Algeciras Bay Port Authority, passengers on foot and bus can access Tangier-Med port starting from today, while passengers in vehicles will be able to access the port starting April 18,” he explained.

He also recalled that during the period of pandemic closure, Tangier-Med has been engaged in a program to improve its various services to travelers with a total budget of 85 million dirhams.

Regarding the port of Tangier-Ville, which offers a single maritime link connecting it to the Spanish port of Tarifa, the first ship has docked this morning, after more than two years of closure due to the pandemic.

In this regard, Mohamed Maghazi, Tangier-Ville Port Operations Director said that “the port is fully prepared […] to ensure safe and healthy conditions for the transit and reception of travelers.”

In a statement to MAP, he noted that two sea links will be scheduled between the ports of Tangier City and Tarifa in the first day of the resumption of maritime links for pedestrian passengers.

As for passengers in vehicles, they will be received starting from next Monday, he said, adding that the number of maritime links should gradually increase with the return of maritime traffic to pre-COVID-19 level.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics had announced, on Monday, the gradual resumption of passenger services between Morocco’s Tangier-Med and Tangier-Ville ports and the Spanish ports of Algeciras and Tarifa, as part of the restoration of maritime links between Morocco and Spain
