Information technology (IT) spending in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) is expected to reach $169 billion in 2022, according to the latest forecast by US research and advisory company, Gartner Inc.

Devices will reach $19 billion, IT services $16 billion, software spending $10 billion, while Data systems’ spending is expected to reach $4 billion.

“This year is proving to be one of the noisiest years on record for Chief information officers (CIO),” said John-David Lovelock, distinguished research vice president at Gartner.

This proves, according to the forecast, that “the digital transformation trend is systemic and long-term, not a one- or two-year trend.”

Digital business objectives including experiential end-consumer experience and supply chain optimization, according to Gartner, are expected to drive expenditure on corporate applications and infrastructure software into a double-growth in 2023.

The crisis between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to have a direct influence on global IT spending, but “geopolitical disruption, inflation, currency fluctuations, and supply chain challenges were among the key factors on the increasing global IT spending,” Gartner highlighted.

Worldwide IT spending is expected to reach a total of $4.4 trillion in 2022, an increase of 4 percent from 2021.

As for Morocco, data suggest that the Kingdom is the second-fastest in “digital transformation” in Africa.

In a recent report dedicated to digital transformation in Morocco during the COVID-19 pandemic, Oxford Business Group said the pandemic “has spurred technological innovation in many sectors.”

Over the last 20 years, Morocco has heavily invested in digital transformation and therefore launched three ambitious digitalization projects, namely e-Morocco 2010 (2005-2010), Maroc Digital 2013 (2009-2013), and Maroc Digital 2020 (2015-2020).
