The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) will be on the agenda of the Security Council. The United Kingdom, which holds the presidency of the United Nations (UN) executive body this month, has scheduled a meeting for April 20 to review the UN mission.
The Special Representative for Western Sahara and head of MINURSO, the Russian Alexander Ivanko are set to present a report on the situation on the ground, including a possible assessment of ceasefire violations noted by the peacekeepers.
In 2020, The UN Security Council extended for 12 months the mandate of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara.
Through this resolution, the Council expressed its full support for the efforts of the Secretary-General to maintain the negotiation process to achieve a settlement of the question of Western Sahara.
In this framework, the UN Security Council called on “the parties” to the conflict to resume negotiations “without preconditions and in good faith” by passing a resolution extending MINURSO’s mandate for another year. Algeria condemned this decision.
The April 20 meeting will allow the UN Secretary General’s Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, to inform the Fifteen of the conclusions of his initial tour of the region last January and his various meetings with international actors with interest in this issue.
