The American School of Marrakesh joined the Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab as the newest member of the pK-12 Collaborative, said the school in a recent press release.
Through J-WEL membership, the American School of Marrakesh entered a community of 26 other schools, universities, NGOs, and companies addressing the world’s most pressing education challenges and exploring opportunities presented by new educational technologies, effective practices, and emerging scientific understandings of learning.
The American school will also co-develop a STEAM program that engages all levels of students with learning activities; co-design and establish a maker space, and participate in J-WEL events focused on teacher professional development in the STEAM curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment informed by learning science and effective educational technology practice.
J-WEL and ASM expect this work to set the stage for strengthening and modernizing the education infrastructure and practice in the region, said the press release.
“The MIT/J-WEL collaboration provides ASM access to, and the opportunity to work with, world-class experts, programs, and colleagues that position the school as a leader in transformational change in Africa to benefit our students, Morocco, and other countries around the world,” said Dr. Casey Asato, ASM Head of School.
The American School of Marrakech will join other members at upcoming J-WEL events, which will bring together representatives of member organizations with MIT faculty and researchers. Through seminars, presentations, and hands-on work, MIT participants support member efforts to transform educational systems and develop solutions.
The collaboration between MIT/J-WEL and ASM is sponsored by the Kadiri Family and the Apeejay Trust. The MIT collaboration with ASM was initiated by Priti Paul Kadiri who graduated from MIT in 1990. The Kadiri Family and the Apeejay Trust funds educational and conservation projects in the most deserving areas of the world. Projects supported range from setting up libraries for under-privileged children to creating habitats for elephants to setting up large scale educational projects in under-served communities.
“The collaboration aligns with our vision of supporting access and equity in education and we believe that it will open the window of opportunity for our students through exploratory learning, fuelling success across a variety of disciplines,” said Ms. Priti Paul Kadiri.
The American School of Marrakech will hold a masterclass on March 29 in the afternoon, with the presence of the executive director of Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab, Vijay Kumar.
The Abdul Latif Jameel World Education Lab (J-WEL) promotes excellence and transformation in education at MIT, and globally by engaging educators, technologists, policymakers, societal leaders, employers, and employees, said the press release.
