The consumer price index (CPI) remained stable at 0.1% in January, compared to the previous month, according to a recent note released by the High Commission for Planning (HCP) on Tuesday.
This stagnation is the result of the 0.1% drop in the food products index and the 0.1% increase in the non-food products index.
The inflation indicator rose by 0.3% over one month, and 3.2% over one year, said HCP.
The increase in food products observed between December 2021 and January 2022 mainly concerned the rise in “Bread and cereals” by 1.9%, “Oils and fats” by 0.8%, and “Mineral waters, soft drinks, fruit, and vegetable juices” by 0.3%.
On the other hand, prices fell by 4.4% for “Vegetables”, “Meat” by 0.6%,” and Fruits by 0.5%. For non-food products, the increase mainly concerned the prices of “Tobacco” by 3.5%, and “Fuel” by 1.1%.
As for the increases of CPI by cities, the most significant increases were recorded in Casablanca with 0.5%, ahead of Kenitra with 0.4%, Agadir and Tetouan with 0.2%, Rabat, Tangier, Laayoune, and Errachidia with 0.1%.
On the other hand, the most significant decreases were recorded in Safi with 1.2%, Beni-Mellal with 0.7%, as well as Fez and Marrakech with 0.4%.
The consumer price index recorded an increase of 3.1% in January 2022, an increase compared to the same month last year.
This resulted from the increase in the index of food products by 4.3%, and the non-food products index by 2.3%. For non-food products, the variations range from a decrease of 0.2% in “communication,” to an increase of 5.9% in “Transport”.
In January 2022, the CPI, which excludes volatile products and products set at public prices, increased by 0.3% compared to December 2021, up 3.2% from January 2021.
