Washington questions Russian troop withdrawal

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the United States has seen no evidence of a significant Russian withdrawal of its military forces from near Ukraine’s borders.

“What we’re seeing is not a meaningful withdrawal,” Blinken told ABC News, describing the threat of Russia invading its pro-Western neighbor as “real.”

Moscow had announced that a pullback is under way, both under Russian annexed Crimea and other bordering provinces.

Speaking to US broadcaster MSNBC on Wednesday, Blinken said “critical units” were in fact continuing to move “toward the border, not away from the border.”

The Russian defense ministry said his nation’s forces were retreating “after finishing military exercises in the country’s southern and western military districts.”

In addition, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs had tweeted that “Ukrainians will believe the Russian troops’ withdrawal when they see it.”
