The Spanish Interior Ministry ordered four drones in January, valued at almost 200,000 euros, for military use to increase border security in Ceuta and Melilla to prevent any “violent” invasion attempt.
“The assaults on the borders of Ceuta and Melilla are becoming more and more violent]. The use of these technical means aims to strengthen the surveillance of border perimeters and to provide a more rational response to attempted assaults by migrants in order to prevent or mitigate these situations,” according to the Director-General of the civil guard, Maria Gamez.
In a statement reported by El Independiente, the Civil Guard cited the effective border protection service between Morocco and Ceuta and Melilla as a reason to justify the procedure. On October 13, seven out of 12 migrants entered Melilla illegally, after attacking an agent with a hook, deplored the Armed Institute, recalling that a few days earlier, the Spanish and Moroccan security forces prevented the entry of 700 sub-Saharan migrants “perfectly organized and using military tactics”.
A group of 400 sub-Saharans had also tried to enter the autonomous city on September 24, showing rare “violence.”
They were throwing “stones and other objects” at the civil guards, according to the government delegation in Melilla, which denounced the massive assaults of migrants that occurred on July 22 (300 migrants), August 28 (350), December 29, and more recently, January 19 and February 6, 2022.
