A Moroccan wife in the Oued Zem region filed a complaint to the court against her husband who reportedly “deserted” her for two months, with no justifiable excuse, local media reports.
As punishment, the Court of First Instance imposed a suspended sentence of two months, including a fine of MAD 7,000 for leaving the family home “without a compelling reason, and evading parental duties.”
The Moroccan Penal Code defines family abandonment as the behavior of a parent leaving the family home for two months, in the absence of force majeure, or “unforeseeable circumstances” without fulfilling his duties towards his children.
“He or she will be punished by imprisonment of one month to one year and a fine of MAD 200 to 2,000, or one of these two penalties”, specifies article 479 of the code.
