A low-ranking local government agent in Casablanca emerged as the mastermind of a criminal network that sold fake Covid-19 passes to dozens of people for months before he was caught.
His golden scam opportunity started in late 2021 he was tasked by his superiors to register vaccination data relative to Hay Mohammadi in the Casablanca vaccination database.
Instead, he manipulated the database to give his non-vaccinated clients vaccine passes.
Together with a social worker in the same neighborhood, they expanded the business to Whatsapp and Telegram and fraudulently added dozens of people to the national vaccination register, according to police records seen by Hespress EN.
At least 60 people were handed fake passes in exchange for 200 dirhams.
Business boomed when the government imposed vaccine passes in public spaces. The network expanded to include eight people. Prices increased too. Their services at times cost 2,500 dirhams.
The network included two people involved in human smuggling.
On Dec. 29, 2021, Judicial Police in Casablanca announced the arrest of eight people, suspected of being linked to the criminal network.
Another raid led to the arrest of nine other people who received forged vaccination passes.
The Court of First Instance of Ain Sebaa in Casablanca will hear, in the upcoming days 17 people involved in the case.
