Morocco received the second batch of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines this Saturday, January 29, as part of two shipments delivered this week by the United States.

The donation totals 1.5 million doses and is a direct shipment from the US as part of the COVAX program. The doses were delivered alongside a donation of 7 freezers with an ultra-cold storage capacity for 2 million doses.

This grant follows the delivery of 850,000 Pfizer vaccine doses back in October, and 300,000 Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccines last July.

Morocco also recently received seven vaccine storage freezers as a donation from USAID in coordination with UNICEF.

They have a total capacity of 2 million doses, which represents 45% of the required national capacity for ultra-cold vaccine storage.

The US military additionally donated a field hospital worth $1.5 million, that will help fight infectious disease outbreaks in Morocco, and will soon donate an intensive care unit system and an adjoining emergency room estimated at $1.7 million, according to a statement from the US Embassy in Rabat.

The United States has invested nearly $20 million in Morocco’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The United States is the largest donor to the COVAX program, with more than $4 billion doses donated thus far. To date, it has delivered more than 290 million vaccine doses to over 100 countries.

In addition to the doses received through the program and those purchased by the Moroccan government, the Kingdom has recently launched a vaccine manufacturing plant in Benslimane, near the capital.

The project is set to cover Morocco’s COVID-19 vaccine needs while manufacturing other vaccines to then enable vaccine sufficiency on the African continent.
