As a result of the “increased” threat of a Russian invasion, the US Embassy in Kyiv asked its citizens in Ukraine to leave the country without delay on Wednesday.
“The US Embassy urges US citizens to consider leaving now,” the embassy said on its website, noting that ” the security situation in Ukraine continues to be unpredictable due to the heightened threat of a Russian military action and may deteriorate without notice.”
The United States announced the recall of certain diplomats and their families on Sunday, followed by the United Kingdom on Monday, then Canada on Tuesday. Ukrainian authorities, however, deemed the decision “premature” and “excessive.”
The West accuses Russia of massing tens of thousands of soldiers on the Ukrainian border and of planning an imminent invasion.
A Kremlin, the executive branch of the government of Russia, denies any bellicose intentions towards Kyiv, but cites a number of treaties that guarantee, in particular, that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will not expand to Ukraine.
Negotiators from Russia, Ukraine, France, and Germany met in Paris on Wednesday to try to defuse the crisis following a series of talks between the Russians and Americans last week.
