Pfizer and BioNTech launch trial tests for Omicron vaccine

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE said on Tuesday they have begun the clinical trial tests of the new Omicron-targetted vaccine.

Over 1,400 people will be enrolled in the trial tests of this Omicron-targetted vaccine in order to study the safety and tolerability of the shots, the companies said.

“While current research and real-world data show that boosters continue to provide a high level of protection against severe disease and hospitalization with Omicron, we recognize the need to be prepared in the event this protection wanes over time and to potentially help address Omicron and new variants in the future,” Pfizer’s head of vaccine research and development, Kathrin Jansen, said in a statement.

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE aim to test the immune response generated by the Omicron-based vaccine both in unvaccinated people and as a booster shot for people who already received two shots of their original COVID-19 vaccine.

Previously, a study showed that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine has been less effective in South Africa at reducing hospitalization from Covid-19 since the emergence of the Omicron variant.

According to the study’s results, published on December 14, people who had been fully inoculated using Pfizer between November 15 and December 7 had a 70% chance of avoiding hospitalization, a decrease from 93% during the previous Delta-driven wave.
