Morocco is reportedly planning the construction of a military naval base in Dakhla, south of the kingdom and opposite the Spanish Canary Islands.
The base is reportedly in the works, as authorities aim to have it provide logistical and military support to friendly African countries, and to host peacekeeping missions of the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), according to news outlet El Espanol.
The base will be built next to the center for fishing and commercial port activities, in the town of Ntirift, 70 kilometers north of Dakhla, in the deep waters outside the Bay of Oued Eddahab.
The base will reportedly have 1,700 Royal Moroccan Navy soldiers and will be used for entry for large submarines and destroyer ships.
In addition, the base will have the function of bunkering, to supply fuel to cargo ships on routes from Africa to other continents.
El Espanol quoted a Royal Moroccan Navy colonel saying that “the size of the base is large, and it could accommodate the USS George Washington (CVN-73) aircraft carrier.”
According to the Spanish news outlet, a group of specialized state engineers visited the facilities to carry out studies that will modify a new part of the port complex, back on January 13.
The infrastructures are paid for by the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics, and Water, which awarded the construction to two Moroccan companies, namely the General Society of Works of Morocco (SGTM) and Somagic On (SOMAGEC-SUD). Following the completion of construction, the base will be under the control of the Ministry of Defence.
