Spanish authorities announced their decision to extend the border closure between Morocco and Ceuta “until June at the least,” citing the development of the pandemic as the main reason for this decision.
Morocco’s borders with Ceuta and Melilla have been closed since March 2020, as a preventive measure to limit the spread of COVID-19. The land borders remain closed with no visibility on when they will reopen.
The city of Ceuta has been experiencing a real proliferation of infections lately, which makes the reopening of borders “inconceivable” to officials, such as Salvadora Mateos, Spanish government delegate to the enclave.
The Spanish government additionally mentioned there may be an opening in May if the epidemiological situation improves.
Morocco has been experiencing a spike of infections as well in the last 5 weeks, fueled by the new Omicron variant.
Cross border workers and Moroccan nationals have been stranded on Spanish territory for almost two years now, many without housing or basic social services.
