Quebec is getting ready to take tougher measures against those who refuse the vaccine by implementing a new tax for non-vaccinated people.
Calling it a “health contribution,” the government of the French-speaking province of Canada is implementing the new measure in light of a hard-hitting COVID-19 wave.
According to Quebec Premier François Legault, the 10% of Quebecers who have not yet received a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine must not harm the 90% who have been vaccinated.
The premier said it should not be up to all Quebecers to pay, referring to the unvaccinated population as a “financial burden.”
The Quebec government will impose a financial penalty of over $100 on unvaccinated individuals, as half of the beds in hospital intensive care units are occupied by patients who have refused the COVID-19 vaccine.
The new “health contribution intended for people who are not vaccinated for non-medical reasons is considered highly counterproductive by several public health experts consulted in Canada.
This coercive measure will adversely affect the impoverished populations, including the new immigrants who are not fully vaccinated. The non-vaccinated Canadian residents are on average less educated, have less income, and are more affected by unemployment.
In the North American country’s media, the issue of valid fears and concerns is also being discussed, as “forcing” the people to get vaccinated will not change their fears.
