Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met with Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz this Tuesday evening, according to sources from both sides.
Israeli media said that the meeting took place at the home of the Minister of Defense, in the city of “Rosh Ha’Ain.”
The Israeli Defense Ministry’s statement confirmed that the two men discussed “security and civil issues at stake.”
According to the statement, the meeting focused on “the common interest in strengthening security coordination, maintaining security stability and preventing terrorism and violence.”
The ministry statement said that Gantz told the Palestinian president “that he intends to continue measures aimed at enhancing confidence in the economic and civil fields.”
This meeting comes approximately four months after the two men met in the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank. At the time, the meeting discussed “routine” security issues and the economy.
Relations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority have deteriorated significantly in recent years. Benjamin Netanyahu, the former prime minister who ruled from 2009 to 2021, made little effort to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and peace talks have been suspended since 2014. During his rule, Jewish settlements expanded in the occupied West Bank.
