The Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship said Canada achieved a record number of new residents in 2021, making the North American country a popular destination for immigrants, as most of its citizens are immigrants.

In order to support Canada’s economic recovery post the pandemic, the Government of Canada has set a goal of welcoming 401,000 new permanent residents for 2021, in a plan extending for the period 2021-2023.

According to the report, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, announced that his country had achieved its desired goal, which is to welcome more than 401,000 new permanent residents in 2021, representing the largest number of arrivals in only one year in Canada’s History.

“Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada’s officials processed a record number of nearly half a million applications in 2021,” according to the Ministry’s press release, adding, “ to reach this, the ministry added new resources and technologies to adapt to Canada’s new immigration system.”

The priority of residency was given to immigrants who were already in Canada, as the majority of these new permanent residents were already in Canada with temporary status.

The Ministry said that it has launched new programs to hire more migrants, including health workers, foreign graduates, and French-speaking residents.

According to labor market experts, business owners, and economists, migration plays a key role in creating job opportunities, stimulating innovation, and helping to fill the labor shortage in key sectors, such as health care, with immigrants representing 37% of pharmacists, 36% of doctors, 39% of dentists, and 23% of nurses, 35% of nursing assistants; Immigration accounts for nearly 100% of Canada’s workforce growth.

About 75% of Canada’s population growth is attributable to immigration, primarily to economic class. By 2036, immigrants will represent nearly 30% of Canada’s population, up by 20.7% recorded in 2011.

The Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said in a statement, “We will continue to welcome immigrants that Canada needs to succeed. I look forward to seeing the wonderful contributions of 401,000, our new neighbors in communities across the country.”

Economic and financial modernization proposes new measures to support a strong and resilient economic recovery, including investing $85 million to reduce the backlog in Canada’s immigration system, speed up the citizenship process, reunite families, and welcome people who can help Canada meet its needs and fill a labor market shortage.

According to the ministry’s statement published on its website, in 2019 Canada received more than 341,000 permanent residents and welcomed more than 184,500 new permanent residents in 2020 despite challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, Quebec’s government announced that it intends to increase the number of immigrants from 49,500 to 52,500 by 2022, according to the Ministry of immigration’s announced plan, in addition to 18,000 applicants for immigrants who weren’t admitted in 2020.

This plan aims to encourage the permanent immigration of young people in order to meet the demographic needs of Quebec as well as the economy’s rebound after the outbreak of the pandemic.
