Morocco’s Basic health coverage’s rate increased to 70.2 percent in 2020, comparing to from 16 percent in 2005, said the National Health Insurance Agency.
On the occasion of the World Health Coverage Day, the national health agency said Morocco has a total of 25.2 million beneficiaries from all health coverage systems, including more than 11.17 million beneficiaries of the compulsory basic sickness insurance system, and 11 million beneficiaries of the medical assistance system.
The goal remains to reach 100 percent of the Moroccan population, following the government’s approval of the compulsory health insurance project that includes traditional traders, manufacturers, and self-contractors.
According to the same agency, the number of medicines compensated under the basic compulsory insurance system for sickness increased from 1,000 medicines in 2006 to 4850 medicines in 2020.
The agency also said that 3.2 percent of the beneficiaries from compulsory basic sickness insurance have at least one long-term illness, and they account for 51.8 percent of total spending.
71.6 percent of the long-term disease expenses are related to chronic and terminal renal insufficiency (26.7 percent), malignant tumors (23.7 percent), diabetes (10.7 percent), and hypertension (10.5 percent), said the agency.
However, the multiplicity of health coverage systems, their standards, the amount of expenses incurred by the insured, as well as the lack of funding for health coverage, obstruct the regulation of the system, said the agency.
