The United Arab Emirates announced on Tuesday that it will move to a four and a half day working week, with Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday becoming the new weekend.

“The UAE is the first nation in the world to introduce a national working week shorter than the global five-day week,” official news agency WAM reported.

The change will come into effect in all federal government departments starting January 1, 2022.

The working week will start on Monday and end on Friday noon, with 8.5 working hours per day for federal employees.
