Morocco’s Health committee on Covid-19 said evidence showed people who have not received a booster shot and live with chronic diseases to have the highest mortality rate in the country, urging those groups to get a third vaccine jab within five months.
“The committee observed lately that most deaths occurred among people who didn’t get their booster shots after 5 months and who were dealing with chronic diseases,” Moulay Said Afif, a member of the scientific committee on vaccination told Hespress English in a statement.
He restated medical evidence showed that the third dose of Covid-19 vaccines broadens antibody-based immunity and boosts protection from variants of the virus, he said.
Only 22% of those aged 60 to 64, and 27% of those aged 65 and above received their booster shots, said the medical expert, adding it is not sufficient to achieve mass immunization.
“For now, the Health Ministry is notifying people via text messages that their health passes have expired if they have not received booster shots,” he said.
All those aged 12 and above are eligible to receive a third dose of the vaccine.
The country imposed the vaccine pass starting October 21 in order to access public spaces and move between cities, but authorities are lax with implementation.
He said, “ despite the loose application, the health pass is still a way to encourage people to get a third anti-COVID-19 vaccine shot.”
