Moroccan Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fattah Alaoui, announced in parliament that the government’s generalization of social protection is set to begin in mid-2022.
The Minister confirmed that individuals registered under the RAMED medical assistance system will be able to benefit from compulsory health coverage (AMO), starting from the second half of 2022.
Some 11 million citizens, considered in a vulnerable socio-economic situation, will benefit from this expansion of AMO’s coverage.
The minister explained that the Government Council approved six draft decrees this Wednesday, aimed at providing 3 million Moroccans with health coverage, a service most artisans, small retailers, informal workers and freelancers don’t benefit from.
The project to generalize basic compulsory health insurance will enable an additional 22 million beneficiaries to cover costs of medical treatments, medication and hospitalization.
According to a timetable set by the Social Protection Framework Law, extended family compensation will be implemented starting 2023, before implementing universal health insurance by year 2025, for Moroccans with no initial basic healthcare system affiliation.
In line with the Minister’s statements; the National Security Fund announced today, its coverage will now include all individuals registered under the CPU, starting next month.
Minister Alawi also took the chance to remind the plenary that “this government’s program is social by nature,” adding that despite some counselors’ criticism of the finance bill, its intention remains achievable, but “results will not show during the government’s first month in power.”
