Morocco holds its first campaign against cyberviolence and cyberharassment from November 4-30, under the theme, “Let’s all contribute to protecting our children from cyber violence and cyber harassment,” announced the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administration Reform.
Organized by the Moroccan Center for Polytechnic Research and Innovation (CMRPI), in partnership with the Council of Europe, the campaign aims to raise awareness about cybernetic risks, especially among children.
“It is [the campaign] intended particularly for children and young people who massively use the various technological tools and digital platforms”, said the president of CMRPI, Youssef Bentaleb, adding that the initiative aims “to warn them of the various cybernetic risks.”
Children are one of the most vulnerable groups to cyber-violence, as data confirms that 31 percent of children have previously received offensive texts and comments on the Internet, according to the Moroccan Center for Research in Multi-Technology and Innovation.
The Minister in charge of Digital Transition, Ghita Mezzour, underlined the importance of rational and ethical use of the various technological tools “in order to ensure the safety of families and individuals, and to establish a healthy digital environment.”
The campaign will focus primarily on teachers and families as they are the main channel of communicating information related to protection against cyber violence to children, according to Youssef Bentaleb, head of the Moroccan Center for Research in Multi-Technology and Innovation, statement to Hespress.
The National Campaign against cyber violence and cyber harassment will enable Moroccan citizens to safely report photos and videos of child sexual abuse posted on the Internet, and report harassment’s content against children shared on social media, added Bentaleb.
The deputy head of the European Union delegation in Morocco, Alessio Capellani, said that certain behaviors including cyberstalking increased exponentially during the pandemic.
