Facebook is changing its brand corporate name to Meta, rendering the Facebook social network service a subsidy of the company, alongside WhatsApp and Instagram.
The move announced by Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday, is seen largely as an attempt by the corporate to rebrand itself amidst accusations of misinformation, tolerating hate speech and biased strategies.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about our identity as we begin this next chapter. Facebook is one of the most used products in the history of the world. It is an iconic social media brand, but increasingly it just doesn’t encompass everything that we do,” said Zuckerberg, quoted by CNN.
The word meta has been working itself into popular usage over the last years to characterize something self-referential, but the head of the social media giant said his brand’s new name is inspired by his childhood admiration of the Greek language, which defines the word as “beyond.”
“For me, it symbolizes that there is always more to build,” he said.
